“ . . . For enthusiasts of every age, here is a gallery of great cars from the beginning to the present day. Each of these machines has its own claim to fame-some for fabulous styling, some for technical developments that changed the course of automotive history, some for racing prowess, and some for sheer “personality.” For each chapter there is a beautiful full-page color portrait of the car in its proper setting. The text is no mere description of the machines. With authority, enthusiasm and wit the author traces the history of each make, illuminating the characters of both cars and men with spine-tingling racing adventures and inside anecdotes. While the story of each make is complete in itself and may be read alone, the book as a whole provides a panorama of automotive history. The story of cars is, of course, also the story of men-some of the most colorful figures of the modern world-drivers such as Nuvolari, Oldfield, Fangio engineers such as Bugatti, Ford, and Porsche. But cars are the real heroes of this book; in these words and pictures they emerge, not as mere collections of nuts and bolts and sheet metal, but as creatures with a kind of life of their own. A life that embodies the urge to freedom and adventure, the pride and love of beauty of both their creators and their users.” (New York – 1960)

Great Cars of All Time Irving Robbin Herb Mott 9781258209704 Books Reviews
This was one of my favorite books as 5th or 6th grade boy, back when my best developed ability was that of drawing pictures of cars. I remember in Fall of 1964 when my father took me to all of the local car dealerships to see all of the new 1965 models--for in those days body styling changed drastically from year to year.
This illustrated book chronicles many of the major developments in the evolution of the automobile. The very earliest vehicles are briefly described, including the 1862 Lenoir which ran on illuminating gas. The early efforts of Germans Daimler and Benz in the 1880's are mentioned, as is that of the American Duryea in 1892. One of the most fascinating early cars for me was the steam-powered Stanley Steamer. Even as early as 1906 the Stanley Steamer set a new land speed record of 127 mph at Daytona Beach. I was also interested in makes of cars that were non existent even while I was a child, such as Packard, Locomobile (a hilarious name if I ever heard one!), and Pierce-Arrow. In the 1930's Cadillac equipped some of their models with the seemingly unbelievable V-16 engine! I was also interested in the 1934 Chrysler Airflow, which was the first mass-produced car with an aerodynamic body shape. My personal favorite was the 1935 Cord, which has such futuristic features as a aerodynamic body shape, bucket seats, no running board or exterior door hinges, and front-wheel drive. I was also surprised to learn when first reading this book that the humble Volkswagen was largely the inspiration of Adolf Hitler! Also of interest is the fact that the name for the American Jeep comes from an usually sure-footed animal featured in the the Popeye cartoons that I enjoyed as a child.
